I lived in Utah for four years and now have this wonderful list of good restaurants to eat at. Here are my favorites:
Bombay House: I think this is the best Indian food I've ever had (and I'm a big fan of Indian food). When you order a curry, they let you choose the spice level, which is really nice. I always go for the medium. The chicken tikka masala with garlic naan is my go-to, but I also love the chicken makhani (butter chicken), the lamb saag, and any of the tandoori dishes. My husband Trevor really likes the Bollywood chicken.
Settebello: This is our favorite thin-crust Italian style pizza in Utah. I'm a classic margherita pizza fan, but they have some great flavors (not the least of which is the margherita pizza topped with arugula and prosciutto).
MidiCi: We never lived close to Settebello, so when we didn't feel like driving very far we'd go to MidiCi, which is very comparable and still quite good. I get the same thing (margherita pizza, occasionally topped with arugula and/or prosciutto) here. They also have a nutella calzone that is delightful.
Two Jack’s Pizza: This is my favorite thick crust pizza (not the Italian stuff) place. The crust is so soft with a great flavor, the pizza isn't overly greasy, they offer lots of topping choices, and the breadsticks are incredible.
Big Daddy’s Pizza: When Trevor and I lived in Utah for the second time, we didn't live close to Two Jack's, so we found a decent substitute near us. Similar to Two Jack's, Big Daddy's isn't overly greasy and has great breadsticks (the "bubba breadsticks"). We really enjoy their combination pizza.
Black Sheep Café: This place is a little pricey, but they have the best Navajo tacos! We loved the red chili, green chili, and traditional Navajo tacos. They're definitely worth checking out.
Hruska’s Kolaches: The cutest little kolache shop, but they close early so be sure to look out for that. We love all of their sweet kolaches, but the raspberry Nutella is my favorite. Their savory kolaches are also incredible--Trevor's favorite is the chicken cilantro.
Puro Peru: My love for Peruvian food runs deep, and this is the best Peruvian place we found in Utah. I love the lomo saltado (rice and french fries topped with a steak-onion-tomato stir fry) with their house green sauce. I think I could eat this every day and not get sick of it.
Toscano: Usually, this restaurant is nothing special. It normally wouldn't be on my list. But sometimes they'll do a chef’s special red snapper with angel hair pasta, and that meal is almost life-changing. Try it if you get the chance (and if you like cooked fish).
Melting pot: Trevor and I had 2 anniversary dinners here! It's a fondue restaurant that's definitely on the pricier side but we enjoy it. They have great non-alcoholic drink options and we absolutely love the Wisconsin Cheddar fondue.
Cubby’s: The Huckleberry shakes (seasonal, but blueberry is almost just as good) and spicy Torta here are to die for. They're known for their tri-tip sandwiches, which are also decent. I've enjoyed several of their salads as well.
Spitz: This place has the best street cart fries! They're topped with lamb & beef, feta, onion, peppers, tomatoes, and olives, with a garlic aioli sauce to dip. Pro tip: you can ask for a mix of regular and sweet potato fries. Trevor liked some of their other sandwich wraps as well.
Café Rio: They're known for their sweet pork burritos and salads, but my favorite is actually the chile roast beef. I love it on the Cafe Rio salad with their creamy ranch tomatillo dressing. I couldn't eat it every day, but when I eat it I always enjoy it!
Guru’s: It seems kind of silly to recommend a place just for their sweet potato fries and fry sauce, but Guru's seriously nails the flavor and texture. That's my favorite thing to get here, though their salads are fun too.
Five Sushi Brothers: We love the sushi rolls here! They have great flavors, they're affordable, and they're open late. My favorite is the "Dylan From Vegas" roll.
Waffle Love: Not your ordinary waffles! They make two types--a sweet Belgian liege waffle and a savory croissant waffle, which are then stacked with different toppings. I love the chicken & waffles (don't knock it 'till you try it!) and the Nutella love waffle. Trevor's favorite is the one with lemon curd.
The Original Pancake House: It's a chain, I know, I know. But I really love their banana pancakes and their Hawaiian pancakes, because unlike other pancake places that simply top their regular pancakes with fruit, the OPH stuffs banana (or pineapple) inside the pancake! The flavors are so good.
Handel’s ice cream: Great new ice cream shop with tons of fun flavors, of which I've tried several. They were mostly all great, but the "monkey business" flavor was out of this world. It's a banana flavored ice cream with chocolate brownie chunks and a caramel swirl. Probably Definitely the best ice cream I've ever had.
Aggie Ice Cream: I feel a little disloyal to the BYU creamery for adding this to my list, but Aggie (Utah State University) ice cream is undeniably better. This is Trevor's favorite ice cream place. I like the ROTC flavor, but the blue mint is also really popular.
Chip Cookies: You'll see a zillion cookie places around Utah, but I think Chip is the original. There's nothing revolutionary going on in terms of flavor (it's good but not life changing), but the texture of these giant ooey gooey cookies that are still fresh and hot from the oven is great. I highly recommend getting one of the original large 6 oz cookies to try.
Dim Sum Kitchen: A great, authentic Chinese restaurant near BYU. Some of my favorites are the har gaw, siu mai, BBQ pork buns, scallion pancake, and kung pao chicken. They also have black vinegar (a type of vinegar paired with dumplings in northern China) available--that's how you know it's authentic!
Ombu Grill: Really great authentic Chinese style hot pot. They have all the right meats, sides, and sauces.
